Well I'm back on wifi I think I worked it out that it's now day 48 ...who knows & who really cares so much has happened. We left Munich yesterday lunchtime after what has been a most wonderful experience . We both adored Munich & we have decided that we will return to Germany maybe next year to perhaps the year after. Bill has stated however that this is the last really long trip . If we come back next year or when ever it will be to Germany ,Austria ,Lichtenstein & Denmark ...ooooo can we do that in 5 weeks ?? Methinks perhaps not Bill.
On with our current adventure. Caught the very efficient train from Munich Haupbanhof Central Station to Fussen deep in Bavarian Alps . This area is known as The Romantic Soul of Bavaria. Kinda think that sums it all up. Delightful ,picturesque smallish town with quaint little coloured buildings often festooned with paintings of scenes from the Middle Ages or just decorative symbols .This place is full of Bavarian traditions that are still very much part of the people's day to day lives..
We actually saw this in action with the unveiling of a fountain in the town square late yesterday afternoon . Really have no idea why they were unveiling a fountain but there was much pomp etc & lots of speeches & a band ... Lots of laughing & clapping too. But haven't got a clue. Bill says it's something to do with a water celebration . Perhaps ???
We have wandered down the crooked lane ways amongst the shops with lots of very fancy Meissen china ( sure I didn't spell that correctly ? ) steins ,clocks & much more. The only thing I really wanted was a handbag it was rough leather very me & very cool but Bill says he can make it & frankly I believe him. We do have the leather & he is "clever" I have already bought one bag & 2 pairs of shoes. We have no room left anyway although we are not overweight . BUT someone did buy a seriously big knife so no room for poor me .
Enough of my " poor me" we had dinner / lunch again early round 5 in another cute as inn. We both had the pork knuckles but I could only eat about half & one dumpling . Bill ate all his knuckle & one dumpling washed down with a half litre of dark beer. I just had a glass of wein.
Forgot to say on the train we made new friends " ooooooooo" 4 youngish guys from Lichtenstein they were having a great time ( drinking). & we were laughing . To give you the short story we were walking through the town after dinner & heard " hey Aussies" well they wanted us to drink with them . Mmmmmm Bill got through 2 more half litres & they bought me a half carafe of red & then wanted to buy me another. I was very sensible & refused . The cross culture discussions were fascinating. They spoke a little English & Swiss German ....we spoke a small amount of German ...we must have talked for about an hour it was getting very cold outside. They wanted us to go to dinner with them then a disco . We were again very sensible & said "nein " so glad we did because to day has been full ,full ,full on .
Got up reasonably early this morning after I had an awful long night of little sleep. Some new fangled mattress idea hard foam with these contours .YUK is all I can say . Up early as I said & so excited about our day.
There are options to get to the Hohenschwangau walk 5 k's ( no way) bus or taxi ....we choose taxi €10 pretty reasonable we figured. You buy timed tickets either for one or both castles & the museum . We got the three tickets. Might as well see it all ! We walked to the first Schloss only about 5 mins from the village but unfortunately you are not allowed to take photos inside but trust me " bloody amazing " they lived well in this summer residence.
Then we rode down the hill in a horse drawn carriage . Think they were Holstein horses but not sure 17hh if not a little more bloody solid & fabulous condition.
One Schloss down the next one is a lot further & I refused to walk up hill for 40 mins . We caught the bus which takes you first to the Marienbrucke ( Mary's Bridge) which spans the spectacular Pollat gorge over a waterfall above the castle. Bill went on the bridge & took great pics but no way was I going on that one !
This Schloss again no photos but oh boy ! This place was started by Mad King Ludwig 11 he ran out of money & subsequently died mysteriously ages about 41.
The Schloss was opened to the public in early 20th C & I guess this funded the completion.
We were very lucky after being guided through numerous rooms we were on the 4 th floor when a group of Americans said they were a choir & could they sing in the Minstrels Hall ...first the guide said no then perhaps a little. I had tears in my eyes. Just spellbinding how lucky were we !
King Ludwig had a vision of his palace as a giant stage to re-create the world of Germanic mythology in the operatic works of Richard Wagner. The acoustics are amazing . Again we were so lucky to hear this choir. Concerts are held there in September each year .
Okay back down this mountain but as it was down hill I agreed to walk...stunning no cars just a widish sealed rd for people & the carriages. The walk was fantastic through the tall alpine forest quite warm & the sun shinning through the trees . Heaven I'd say.
Taxi back to our hotel & currently deciding on dinner very tired & hungry but no pork knuckles tonight .
